Don’t underestimate it! European e-commerce is worth 757 billion euros in 2020

Over the past few years, the number of online shoppers in Europe has been growing steadily. Last year, due to the epidemic, the number of online shoppers saw the largest increase, with the proportion of online shopping reaching 71%, higher than 66% in 2019.

Recently, Ecommerce Europe and EuroCommerce jointly released the 2021 European e-commerce report . Data showed that the total value of e-commerce in Europe grew to 757 billion euros in 2020, an increase of 10% from 690 billion euros in 2019.

In terms of market share in the whole of Europe, Western Europe, represented by the UK and France, occupies the main market, accounting for 64%. In terms of growth rate, Eastern Europe shines with a growth rate of 46%, while Western Europe is developing steadily at a growth rate of 4% due to its relatively mature e-commerce development .

The epidemic is a strong driver of e-commerce in Europe. Under the lockdown, the offline economy is restricted, and the economic impact of physical stores is to some extent absorbed by the growth of e-commerce.

Secretary General of European eCommerce said: “The past year has revealed the importance of digital transformation. E-commerce has proven to be very suitable for promoting the digitization of retail and creating a seamless shopping experience for consumers. We are still in a transitional stage and policymakers need to recognize the potential of e-commerce and increase investment in it.”

According to a recent study of the e-commerce market by local institutions, the total European cross-border e-commerce market , including the United Kingdom, Switzerland and Norway, had sales of 198.5 billion euros in 2020 (excluding travel), of which 115.4 billion euros were generated by e-commerce platforms. Amazon and eBay occupied the main market share, with approximately 44.3 billion euros and 22.8 billion euros respectively.

The agency predicts that by 2025 , the sales share of e-commerce platforms in the European cross-border e-commerce market will increase from the current 58% to 65%.

After Brexit, sellers on the European site have also had a lot of added pressure on inventory. However, according to recent emails received by sellers, starting from November, goods from the UK FBA can also be shipped to other European countries, and sellers on the European site can once again ship from a single warehouse.

As the second largest market for cross-border sellers, the European site is also worthy of attention. Relevant sellers should also pay close attention to local trends, conduct sufficient market research, and adjust strategies in a timely manner.
