Amazon brings forward its India promotion to compete with Flipkart for the Indian consumer market

Yesterday, Amazon India issued an announcement that it would advance its Indian Festival Big Sale to October 3. Previously, Amazon was expected to start its Indian promotion on October 4, but Flipkart, which announced its Big Billion Days promotion on October 7, was worried that Amazon would seize the Indian market ahead of schedule, so it moved the event date forward to October 3. Now, the two e-commerce giants will start their promotions on the same day to grab a share of Indian consumption.

While Flipkart’s Big Billion Days sale is scheduled to end on October 10, from the original six days to eight days, Amazon India’s sale (GIF) will continue for a month.

According to RedSeer Consulting's survey data, e-commerce companies will achieve sales of $4.8 billion in the first week of this year's Indian promotion festival, a 30% increase from 2020. Last year, the gross merchandise value (GMV) of e-commerce companies in the first week of festival sales was close to $3.7 billion.

RedSeer Consulting expects that overall e-commerce sales will increase by 23% to $9 billion this year from $7.4 billion in 2020. Despite this , the expected sales growth rate is still lower than the 48% sales growth record last year , which was due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic and the restrictions of national policies, which led to a sharp decline in offline sales and a surge in online consumption, allowing e-commerce to seize the consumer market.

On Sunday, Amazon officials issued a statement saying: "Our top priority remains to gain customer trust and safeguard the interests of sellers, especially the interests of thousands of small sellers and tens of thousands of local store owners across India. We will continue to innovate for our partners, small businesses and customers to help them prepare for the upcoming holiday promotions." In addition, Amazon officials emphasized that Prime members will have priority to experience the event.

Meanwhile, Flipkart Group CEO Kalyan Krishnamurthy said in an internal memo on Saturday: "We have long observed that consumers are focusing on value and quality of goods, and we are determined to contribute in this regard. Thousands of sellers have joined us this year, and for many of them, Big Billion Days will be crucial as they continue to work hard to mitigate the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on their businesses."

India’s big festival sale is around the corner, and the two e-commerce giants are gearing up for the event. Sellers who are interested should hurry up and join in!
