Another market is rising! Amazon dominates the US sporting goods market

On September 14, according to the latest research from PYMNTS, Amazon dominates the US sporting goods market , with Dick 's ranking second, ahead of Walmart.

It is understood that in the first three quarters of 2020, both Amazon and Walmart saw a decline in sales of sporting goods, music, books and hobby products. However, after the third quarter, Amazon's year-end holiday shopping boom greatly increased sales of such products.

In the last quarter of last year alone, Amazon's sporting goods and music book categories accounted for one-fifth of all sales , and it seems that most consumers are eager to make a fortune in the year-end discount activities .

Data shows that in the past year, sales of sporting goods, hobby products, music and books accounted for more than 16% of Amazon's total retail sales ; in contrast, for Walmart, this category only accounted for 3% of its total sales, and its market share did not increase significantly .

For many years, Amazon has been working hard to sell Kindle readers, but from 2014 to 2020, Amazon's market share in categories such as sporting goods and music books has been increasing, more than doubling in 6 years; during this period, Walmart's share has been declining .

In addition, Dick's Sporting Goods also achieved record growth in 2020, with same-store sales increasing by nearly 10%. Coupled with the epidemic, the company's e-commerce sales increased by 100%.

It is reported that seven years ago, Walmart lost its lead over Amazon in sporting goods and hobby products. At that time, Walmart had not yet established the omni-channel infrastructure like it does now. Therefore, when it was ready to build the infrastructure, Amazon had already taken enough market share from other merchants to consolidate its leading position.

With Amazon accounting for 44% of all sporting goods, hobby and book sales , other retailers are looking to expand into areas where Amazon has yet to gain an advantage: offline bricks and mortar stores. Dick’s Sporting Goods, for example, launched its first interactive concept store in April. And the company said last month that it expects to open six new stores and eight specialty concept stores this year.

While Amazon’s department store plans remain shrouded in secrecy, people familiar with the matter said sporting goods are among the items most likely to be featured when the first stores open in Ohio and California.
