Australians spent more than A$50.46 billion online in 2020, an increase of 57% from the previous year.
This is according to a report from Australia Post, which shows that one in four Australians made at least 10 online purchases between March and December last year. Shopping in the afternoon has also become more popular as people work from home. Among them, fashion items are the most popular products for online consumers.
The main areas where consumers who frequently shop online live are Narre Warren North in Victoria , Secret Harbour in Western Australia, Eatons Hill in Queensland, Frenchs Forest in New South Wales and Wakerly in Queensland.
Home furnishings and appliances are popular among consumers in these regions, while they also love searching online marketplaces and discount stores.
According to the report, 9 million Australian households shopped online last year - accounting for 82% of all Australian households. Of these, 1.3 million households tried shopping for the first time in 2020 - these households did not make a single online purchase in 2019.
Of these 1.3 million households, more than half continue to shop online relatively frequently. After their first purchase, they will make a repeat purchase at least three months into 2020. Half of Australia's new online shoppers prefer home and garden products, which is similar to the situation of most consumers in Europe and the United States during the epidemic.
These new shoppers come from two different groups. "The first is young and middle-aged households who are up-to-date and tech-savvy but have a clear understanding of what they buy and how to manage their finances," the report explains. "The second is older households who may be retired and often live in remote rural areas, with a growing appetite for online shopping."
The report also noted that even in the first few months of 2021, Australia Post saw about 5 million households continue to shop online each month, and a recent survey by the Australian Bureau of Statistics found that one-third of Australians said they now prefer to shop online compared to before the epidemic.
"Shopper habits have changed and they prefer to buy from a wider range of merchants and product categories," Australia Post general manager Ben Franzi said. Australian e-commerce Online Shopping Fashion |
