Since the Indonesian government officially implemented public activity restrictions (PPKM) on July 3, 2021 , some e-commerce websites have seen a surge in sales of some product categories.
Tokopedia noted that in the first 10 days of PPKM implementation, transactions for health products on the platform more than doubled. Transactions for food and beverages, books, body care and gyms also increased.
Ekhel Chandra Wijaya, senior director of external communications at Tokopedia, explained: “During the implementation of PPKM, there were several provinces that saw the highest growth in product purchases, such as Papua, Banten, Papua, West Java and East Java. ”
In addition, the transaction volume of health products on the Bukalapak platform has also increased. Bukalapak pointed out that during the implementation of PPKM , consumer demand for oxygen cylinders and portable oxygen doubled. The health category has become a popular search term on the Bukalapak platform . “ Our team has noticed an increase in transactions in the health category, such as thermometers, medical masks, oximeters, face shields, and various health products, ” said Baskara Aditama, vice president of marketplace quality at Bukalapak .
Radityo Triatmojo , head of public policy at Shopee Indonesia , said his team had seen an increase in demand and searches for health products, food and beverages, and other daily essentials across regions during the pandemic .
At the same time, the increase in e-commerce transactions has led to an increase in the number of goods shipped. Bukalapak said that 60% of its platform users choose BukaExpress service to deliver goods.
On the Tokopedia platform, sellers who ship through the GoSend Instant and SameDay services are having difficulty finding drivers. Tokopedia believes that the problem is caused by a surge in shipments that has led to delivery delays.
Citing Katadata, several logistics companies such as J&T EkspressPaxel have seen an increase in shipments driven by e-commerce transactions . Paxel co-founder Zaldy Ilham Masita revealed that the same delivery service has increased by more than 30% compared to before PPKM. J&T Express also saw an increase in deliveries during the PPKM period, as consumers’ main consumption channel during the PPKM period was online shopping. Robin Lo, CEO of J&T Express, said that 70% of the goods transported by the company came from the e-commerce sector . Indonesia platform |
