5.4 million handheld garment steamers in the U.S. recalled due to severe burns

Handheld garment steamers are easy to operate and use, and have become a daily necessity in many people's lives. However, due to design problems in some products and certain dangers of the steam generated by the heating of garment steamers, many safety issues regarding garment steamers have arisen recently.

106 burn reports, 5.4 million handheld garment steamers recalled in the US

WASHINGTON (AP) — HSN is recalling more than 5 million handheld clothing steamers sold nationwide after hot water sprayed or leaked from them, according to a notice from the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission on Wednesday .

Joy/jm-branded My Little Steamer and My Little Steamer Go Mini handheld costume steamers were sold on the HSN website and on the HSN television network, as well as in-store and online at retailers such as Amazon, Bed Bath & Beyond, Lowes, Target and Walmart. From January 2002 to December 2020, the products were sold individually for between $10 and $30 and in bundles for between $20 and $50.

HSN has received 227 reports of steam hot water spraying or leaking, including 106 reports of burns, which were submitted to the Safety Committee for notification. This includes 8 cases of second-degree burns and 6 cases of third-degree burns. The product recall is now in progress.

So many reports of burns have also caused people to question the safety of hanging irons.

Many batches of domestic garment steamer samples failed to meet standards

Not long ago, the State Administration for Market Regulation released the results of the national supervision and random inspection of the quality of fabric steam engine products.

The results showed that among the 40 batches of samples, 3 batches were suspected of being counterfeit products, and all failed the tests according to the current national standards; another 4 batches among the 37 batches of samples were unqualified products.

Garment steamers have problems such as lack of stability, temperature rise limit of the power cord exceeding the national standard, steam jetting during use, and risk of electric leakage, and are all judged to be unqualified products.

Fortunately, the unqualified products sampled domestically have been exposed. Previously, the Shanghai Consumer Council also tested 30 handheld garment steamers, including some high-quality products , and samples of some domestic brands performed well.

Here we would also like to remind sellers that if the products they sell include hanging irons, they must pay attention to the quality of the products.
