Big Y Foods launches new e-commerce platform

Recently, Big Y Foods, an American company, launched a new e-commerce platform : myPicks online ordering.

Founded in 1936, Big Y is an American family-owned supermarket chain and one of the largest independently-operated supermarket chains in New England.

"We are always looking for ways to improve the shopping experience for our customers. Over the past year, the surge in demand caused by the coronavirus pandemic has taught us the importance of having an e-commerce presence , " said Michael P. D'Amour, Chief Operating Officer of Big Y.

The company's new e-commerce platform, myPicks, offers customers a contactless way to order online and pick up their groceries curbside at a Big Y store. Big Y will assemble those orders at a facility in Chicopee. The company estimates the service will reach 7,000 customers per week.

Big   Y's physical order assembly area in Chicopee began construction in late 2019 and was completed last fall . This automated micro -assembly center covers an area of 12,000 square feet and houses 20,000 of the most popular items sold at Big Y. It is adjacent to the Big Y supermarket and can replenish the products needed for each order in a timely manner .

The company said its highly trained e-commerce shoppers will combine years of supermarket experience to select the best and highest quality fresh food for myPicks.

Over the past few weeks, Big Y has been testing their new service. By the end of the year, customers will also be able to pick up their online orders via temperature-controlled totes in secure lockers at Cooley Street in Springfield and other Big Y stores.

The company is currently working with Instacart, a grocery delivery and pickup service , to deliver groceries to all of the grocer's stores.

It is understood that global e-commerce sales are expected to grow by about 14% in 2021, and online grocery stores will continue to grow. At the same time, data surveys show that nearly half of North American grocery consumers want e-commerce platforms to provide omni-channel logistics . It is believed that the online sales and offline delivery model of groceries will become more and more mature.
