With a monthly visit share of over 22%, Russian e-commerce WB is gaining momentum

With a monthly visit share of over 22%, Russian e-commerce WB is gaining momentum

According to Alexey Petrovsky, chief analyst at Price, citing data from online marketing service company Semrush, Russia's largest e-commerce platform Wildberries (hereinafter referred to as WB) is still a leader in Russian e-commerce.

According to its data, WB accounted for 22.02% of the total monthly visits to the top 20 e-commerce websites in Russia in February this year. It is reported that this is another peak for WB since November 2019. In November 2019, WB accounted for 23.14% of the total visits.

As shown in the figure, November and December of each year are basically the time when WB's visits explode , mainly because of the Double 11 and Black Friday in November and the Christmas and New Year promotions in December. WB also has its "bad luck" times. In January last year, WB's visits "plummeted" and its share was only 17%.

Since its establishment in 2004 , WB has overcome many difficulties to become the largest e-commerce platform in Russia. Last year, WB's turnover reached 437.2 billion rubles (about 38.4 billion yuan). Its founder Tatyana Bakalchuk has also become the richest female entrepreneur in Russia. According to Forbes data, her assets are about 13.1 billion US dollars.

As can be seen from the above figure, the total number of visits to e-commerce websites in January last year decreased compared to December 2019. However, starting from February, the data began to rise. At the same time, it can also be seen that the overall number of visits in 2020 is much higher than that in 2019, which is inseparable from the positive impact of the new crown epidemic.

The epidemic has caused more Russians to switch to e-commerce platforms for shopping. Data shows that the average monthly visits to the top 20 e-commerce websites in Russia in 2020 were 700 million. According to Petrovsky's data, the total visits for the whole year were 850 billion rubles.

As the number of online shoppers increases, e-commerce orders naturally follow suit. According to the Russian Association of E-Commerce Companies (AKIT), the total amount of orders placed by Russians in Russian online stores in 2020 reached 2.781 trillion rubles (about 241.2 billion yuan).

Boris Ovchinnikov, research director at data analysis firm Data Insight, estimated that the Russian e-commerce market was worth 2.5 trillion rubles last year.
