Easter becomes "cold", retail sales may continue to decline

This year's Easter is on April 4, 2021. During Easter, people give each other Easter eggs, which symbolize life and prosperity .

 

Like other festivals, consumers in Western countries will buy gifts in large quantities during the festival . However , some time ago, the third wave of the epidemic in Europe hit hard, and various countries implemented blockade measures with different standards .

 

The knock-on effects of the pandemic are still ongoing, with continued restrictions on social gatherings affecting shoppers' enthusiasm for gifts and meals, so Easter retail sales will fall for the second consecutive year.

 

According to the latest data from data and analytics company GlobalData , about 40% of respondents said they planned to buy Easter gifts this year, down from 53.5% last year, which could lead to a 25% drop in overall sales .

 

Nearly 60% of respondents said they had already bought or planned to buy something for Easter this year, a 7.6% decrease from last Easter .

 

This year's Easter is likely to remain quiet and sales will fall as people plan to spend less.

 

Zoe Mills, retail analyst at GlobalData, warned that falling spending would be the "biggest concern for retailers" who are hoping for some breathing space when they reopen .

 

“With fewer consumers intending to spend at Easter, retailers must appeal to those who are still invested in the event, encouraging consumers to spend more money after a difficult year and some Easter eggs as a treat .

 

Hotel Chocolat has a proven track record when it comes to attracting shoppers to deals . The retailer thrived during the 2020 festive season, with total revenue up 19% in the 13 weeks to December 27, 2020.

 

While the total number of customers buying food and drinks to celebrate Easter will fall by 3.8%, the new relaxed lockdown restrictions will mean customers will focus on buying outdoor food .

 

This Easter , there will be many outdoor gatherings and many families will buy a lot of goods for it. At that time, food sales will increase significantly.

 

Zoe Mills said if the weather was nice, grocers should target items within their Easter food and drink range for outdoor celebrations .
