After nearly 30 years of making music, Daft Punk announced their disbandment in a video on their YouTube channel, which caused a heated discussion on the Internet and subsequently set off a wave of nostalgic marketing on eBay.

 

Last week, French electronic music group Daft Punk announced its disbandment with an 8-minute video titled "Epilogue". Daft Punk spokesperson Kathryn Frazier later confirmed the news to various media outlets, but did not disclose the reasons for the disbandment or related details.

 

Daft Punk was founded in 1993 and shot to fame with its debut album "Homework" released in 1997. In the past 28 years, Daft Punk has released four studio albums, won seven Grammy Awards, and topped countless charts, consolidating their position as the leaders of the French house movement and profoundly influencing the development of pop music.

 

Less than half an hour after the farewell video was released on Twitter, Daft Punk became the number one hot topic. This news not only caused many fans and musicians to sigh on social media, but also set off a wave of nostalgic marketing on eBay.

 

The eBay shopping portal reported that purchases of items related to the band were up 500% from the previous week. Similarly, searches for items such as signed articles, records, helmets, LPs, T-shirts, posters, and even flyers were up 600%.

 

The data from eBay Russia is even more shocking. On the day the news of the group's disbandment was announced, the number of searches for the keyword "Daft Punk" on eBay Russia increased by 4517% compared to the previous day. In the two days from the 22nd to the 24th, the sales of Daft Punk-themed souvenirs increased by 735%.

 

In fact, eBay published an article earlier , saying that the music industry in 2020 ushered in an epic turning point: due to the impact of the epidemic on traditional live performances, the music industry is moving towards an era of digital popularization, and the supply of musical instruments and equipment is also adapting to this change. Its online penetration rate has increased, and new products have been transformed towards end-users.

 

According to eBay data, Sweatwater, a large American online retailer of musical instruments and audio-visual equipment, added an average of 5,000 new users every day during Black Friday 2020. Sales of USB microphones soared 253%, and audio recording equipment and interface products grew by 23%-48%. The core business of Focusrite, a leading British audio product brand, grew by 23% in the first half of 2020, exceeding expectations.

 

At present, musical instruments represented by guitars, bass guitar amplifiers, and electronic drums and their accessories, and professional audio equipment represented by audio /MIDI interfaces and wireless microphones are both popular sales categories on eBay.
