In the United States, product safety issues have always been highly valued by relevant departments. Any product with safety risks will be required to be recalled immediately. Many leading domestic sellers have had the experience of recalling problematic products.
However, the US government recently expressed doubts about the way Amazon and other e-commerce platforms handle recalled products.
It is understood that the U.S. House of Representatives and the Commerce Committee have sent letters to Amazon, eBay, Walmart and several other online shopping websites, asking them whether they have removed the products that need to be recalled in accordance with regulations.
Previously, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) recalled Rock'n Play and Newborn Lounger baby loungers due to safety issues. However, someone discovered that an e-commerce platform was still selling these two products, and the products were removed from the shelves after being reported.
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission believes that there is currently no effective measure to ensure that these e-commerce platforms will remove these recalled products as required. According to the commission, Rock'n Play's products directly or indirectly caused the deaths of about 100 children, so the sales channels of such products must be strictly monitored.
In addition, members of Congress, including committee chairpersons Cathy Mack and Maurice Rogers, expressed concern that e-commerce platforms may be putting children and all consumers at risk by doing too little to prevent the sale of recalled products.
Recently, House representatives asked all e-commerce companies to detail their current efforts to remove recalled products from their shelves, including the number of employees responsible for related work.
In addition, the government officials want to know what steps the companies will take in the future and whether there are any legal issues in resolving these issues. The letter also asks the companies whether they are willing to work with the committee to jointly find a solution to the problems.
A spokesperson for one of the companies said that the problem of recalled products still being sold on the platform is actually very common, but the company is currently taking this issue very "seriously" and has removed listings that violate relevant regulations.
Second-hand e-commerce platform eBay also stated that the company attaches great importance to this issue. It has currently applied artificial intelligence tools to help detect related products and hopes to cooperate with the House Committee.
It is reported that the tech giants have been told that they must respond by August 31.
After pressure from the government, major e-commerce platforms will certainly pay more attention to the issue of product recalls, and there may be a small peak in the number of products suddenly being removed from the platforms. Amazon USA Removed |
