Americans are expected to spend more on Mother's Day in 2023 than ever before, according to new data from the National Retail Federation .
The National Retail Federation surveyed 8,164 consumers about their Mother's Day spending plans in April 2023. The agency predicts that consumers will spend $35.7 billion on Mother's Day this year , nearly $4 billion higher than the record of $31.7 billion set in 2022.
In addition, this year's Mother's Day, the average American consumer will spend $274.02, an increase of nearly $ 30 , higher than the record of $245.76 in 2022. Among them , consumers aged 35 to 44 have the largest budget , with an average of $382.26 per person.
Statistics show that 84% of respondents said they would celebrate Mother's Day this year. 34% of respondents said they planned to buy gifts online , which is a slight decrease from 36% in 2022, the same as the level in 2021 , and a decrease of 8% from 2020, when the epidemic was at its worst and most consumers chose to shop online . In addition, 34% of consumers said they planned to shop in department stores, up from 30% in 2022 and 28% in 2021.
Another 30% said they plan to buy gifts from specialty stores such as greeting card shops, florists or jewelry stores. Respondents also mentioned small local shops , discount stores and specialty clothing stores.
In terms of gift choices, flowers and greeting cards are the two most popular categories among consumers. Nearly three-quarters of the respondents said they planned to give their mothers flowers and greeting cards.
In addition to flowers and greeting cards, jewelry products are also a popular gift choice for consumers. 44 % of respondents plan to give their mothers a piece of jewelry, with an average budget of nearly $60 per person.
