Amazon and other e-commerce platforms have been warned for illegally selling pressure cookers!

According to recent reports from foreign media, India's Central Consumer Protection Authority ( CCPA) has launched a nationwide anti-counterfeiting campaign, and products on many e-commerce platforms have been found to be substandard, including Amazon.

The products under investigation by the CCPA are helmets, pressure cookers and cooking gas cylinders, which are commonly used in daily life. The CCPA has issued instructions to tax collectors across the country to investigate unfair trade practices and violations of consumer rights in the manufacture or sale of such products.

The investigation found that some pressure cookers sold on e-commerce platforms Amazon, Flipkart, PaytmMall, Snapdeal and Shopclues have defects that may cause safety accidents.

There are two types of illegal pressure cookers on Amazon: AmazonBasics 4-liter stainless steel lid pressure cooker; Quba 5-liter induction base aluminum pressure cooker.

There are three models available on Flipkart: Quba 5-litre Aluminium Regular Induction Bottom Pressure Cooker; PRISINE 5-litre Stainless Steel Base Induction Pressure Cooker; and DIAMOND 10-litre Aluminium Pressure Cooker.

Snapdeal has two models: ABODE 5-litre pressure cooker with aluminium lid and Bestech 5-litre mirror-finished induction cooktop cum Cherry pressure cooker.

There are three products on Shopclues: Quba 5-liter Aluminum Ordinary Induction Bottom Pressure Cooker; PRISINE 5-liter Stainless Steel Base Induction Pressure Cooker; Ethical 5-liter Bottom Stainless Steel Pressure Cooker.

Paytmmall also has three models, namely PRISTINE 5.5-liter outer lid pressure cooker induction cooker base (silver, stainless steel, 1 set); Quba 5-liter inner lid pressure cooker induction cooker (silver, aluminum, 1 set); Ethical induction cookware set (stainless steel, 1 set).

At present, CCPA has issued warnings to these five e-commerce platforms, saying that they sell pressure cookers that do not meet BIS quality specifications. According to BIS regulations, household pressure cookers must comply with Indian Standard IS 2347:2017 and carry the standard mark under the permission of BIS.

CCPA also sent a letter to the Indian Ministry of Commerce, listing a list of 13 types of non-compliant pressure cookers, requesting immediate action against the retailers involved. CCPA also launched a campaign in India to inform consumers about the dangers of counterfeit and non-compliant products.

Countries have always had certain regulations on product quality. This time, even Amazon's own brand AmazonBasics products were found to have safety issues, which once again sounded the alarm for sellers.
