Amazon Handmade UK marketplace grows in popularity

Recently, research commissioned by Amazon's handmade platform showed that last year the UK saw the largest growth in new handmade craftsmen in a decade, with self- employed handmade craftsmen recording a 33% growth between 2019 and 2020 alone . It is reported that the number of handmade craftsmen who set up handmade companies has increased by 21% overall over the past decade .

As the saying goes, where there is demand there is a market. This growth also shows that the market share of British handmade crafts is also increasing.

Amazon Handmade , a platform for displaying handmade personalized products , commissioned local handmade people to conduct this research. The data shows that Birmingham, Edinburgh and London are the hotspots for handmade in the UK. Especially during the epidemic, Birmingham and the West Midlands have grown more than any other region in the UK , while Edinburgh (home to 18% of Scotland's craftsmen) and London ( home to 31 % of the UK's craftsmen ) have the most craftsmen in the UK.

It is not surprising that the number of handicraft makers has increased during the epidemic . On the one hand, it is because of the epidemic lockdown that people have to stay at home and need to develop some new hobbies to pass the time. On the other hand, it is because some people hope to find ways to work from home to increase their income.

So far, this growth trend shows no signs of slowing down . Amazon Handmade has found that more and more people in the UK have turned to handcrafting as a creative sideline . One in five ( 18%) people who took up a creative hobby during the pandemic were inspired to leave their 9-to-5 jobs and choose to sell their own handmade products instead . According to survey data, more than 80% of people under the age of 35 who took up handcrafting during the pandemic are currently selling their own products full-time or part-time.

Amazon Handmade global store manager said: "Last year saw a record number of self-employed craftspeople in the UK , and as numbers continue to grow , we're seeing people finding creative ways to express themselves. "

It is worth noting that most foreign handicrafts require pure handwork. According to Amazon sellers who have sold such products, their products were originally handmade, but after sales increased, they adopted the method of manual design and machine production. As a result, the product links were directly banned from sale on the platform.
