For the annual Prime Day, sellers of all sizes have started slashing prices like crazy. Not making a purchase on that day feels like a loss of 100 million.
But according to Irish buyers, not only did they not enjoy discounts on Prime Day, the prices were even higher than usual .
Before Prime Day, Amazon had been promoting its promotions around the world, saying that discounts on that day were as high as 50%. On the first day of Prime Day, many Irish buyers reported that they were overcharged for multiple products. Ireland currently does not have an independent site, so locals usually purchase on Amazon through the UK site, but during the event they were required to pay both Irish and UK taxes.
A buyer was preparing to buy Samsung headphones priced at £89, but was asked to pay £117.42 at checkout.
Another buyer said: "Any product priced over £19 will be significantly priced if the delivery address is Ireland." For example, the price of an Echo Bud, which was priced at £49.99, increased to £72.99 when checking out, and a Ring Alarm, which was priced at £149, became £202 when checking out. This is not an isolated case.
The price increase is really not low. I wanted to save money, but ended up spending more. As a small buyer, I feel really bitter. How can I swallow this loss? I must ask for an explanation.
In response, Amazon responded through the Irish Times: "There is indeed an issue with pricing for Irish buyers, and we apologize for the inconvenience. We will also deal with it immediately and contact all affected buyers to ensure that they can receive the full discount. We will also refund the additional fees incurred due to the double taxation error."
Since leaving the European Union, the UK has suddenly become what the trade community calls a "third country", which means that many products shipped from UK warehouses to Ireland will be subject to additional new taxes and fees. It is understood that since the beginning of this year, Irish buyers using UK websites (including amazon.co.uk) have encountered more and more obstacles and higher fees. These may increase the cost of some products by up to 40%, and will inevitably lead to various problems such as delivery delays.
However, these issues have not stopped Irish buyers from continuing to use the UK website, with Amazon still one of the most popular sites and Irish consumers spending hundreds of millions of euros on Amazon every year.
