Almost half of Swiss consumers want to spend less in the future, with the amount spent expected to decrease in several product and service categories.
Many consumers in Switzerland have saved some money in recent months . They haven’t been to restaurants and have hardly travelled. While this is temporary, the crisis could have a lasting effect on consumer behaviour.
Although most people will return to normal life after receiving the vaccine, a survey by Alix Partners showed that 43% of consumers participating in the survey said that they would indeed reduce their spending. It is reported that their spending on entertainment and culture, travel, beauty products and services, and home and clothing will continue to decline in the future .
But in addition to spending less, the Swiss also plan to shop more online, with online spending set to increase. Around a third of respondents said they want to buy clothing mainly online in the future. And online shopping for food and groceries is also likely to increase in the coming years.
Therefore, under the circumstances of reduced spending, the online market still has great development potential.
The pandemic has also led to another change in Swiss consumer behavior. Now, more than a third of the Swiss population is worried about their health and finances. "This will also change the product mix of retailers," commented Cornelia Brühwiler of Alix Partners .
She believes that foods with additives that boost immune system function will become increasingly popular, as well as over-the-counter medicines. In addition, disinfectants will remain available in almost all stores even after the pandemic.
This shows that people's consumption habits and preferences have undergone some changes, and these changes will last longer, resulting in a richer and more diverse combination and variety of products and a prosperous development of the online shopping market.
