It was announced on Friday that the two Boeing 777 aircraft will be operated by Michigan-based Kalitta Air and AeroLogic, a cargo airline joint venture between DHL and Lufthansa.
This is also the second time that DHL Express has added two large cargo planes to its fleet , mainly to strengthen services between the Asia-Pacific region and the United States and Europe . Because the volume of cargo shipped from the Asia-Pacific region to Europe and the United States has increased "exponentially" , the cargo pressure on the route is indeed not small.
The expansion of e-commerce is the main reason for the strong growth of cargo airlines, including DHL. By 2024, online and mobile sales are expected to increase to $2.5 trillion in the Asia-Pacific region alone. The air cargo market has returned to its pre-epidemic state , with data showing that global air cargo demand grew by 9% in February .
Sean Wall, executive vice president of network operations and aviation for DHL Express in Asia Pacific, said: “The rapid growth of e-commerce will continue to demand greater efficiency and faster delivery from supply chains and air freight in the medium and long term.”
The merged flights will add nearly 2,350 tons of capacity per week. In addition to the increase in the number of packages handled , the transportation time will also be shortened .
Kalitta Airlines will fly five times a week from the US to DHL Express ' South Asia hub in Sydney . The route will go through Hong Kong and Japan before returning to Los Angeles. AeroLogic will operate from Leipzig/Halle International Airport in Germany to Hong Kong and Singapore , with a stop in Bahrain on the return journey .
DHL said that in addition, Kalitta Air will operate a new route between Singapore and Sydney six times a week. Kalitta Airlines has been operating routes between Asia Pacific to the United States and between Asia Pacific and the European Union for many years. Just last summer, the US Department of Transportation granted Kalitta the right to operate routes between Hong Kong and Singapore under the bilateral aviation agreement with Hong Kong .
As for DHL's Singapore hub , we learned that it is growing as a transshipment hub for Oceania, with 90% of all cargo from Australia and New Zealand departing from here . And now it is also trying to expand its influence in Asia, with its exports to Europe and the United States growing .
As a leading company in the shipping industry, DHL operates more than 280 aircraft with 17 partner airlines, making more than 2,200 flights around the world every day. DHL ordered 14 aircraft in 2018, four of which are scheduled to be put into use this year . In January, DHL ordered another eight 777 freighters , which are scheduled to be put into use in 2022 .
The twin-engine 777 has a payload capacity of 102 tons and a range of 5,965 miles, and has the lowest travel costs of all wide-body jets, allowing operators to reduce the number of stops and reduce airport landing fees on long-haul routes. It can be said that in order to maintain its advantage in a good market environment, DHL is also constantly improving its capacity, which is undoubtedly good news for the majority of sellers. logistics DHL |
