Digital Commerce 360 updated its estimates for 2020 e-commerce sales in January 2021 , estimating that U.S. online spending will account for 21.3% of total retail sales for the year , with Amazon accounting for nearly a third of all U.S. e-commerce.
861.12 billion US dollars ! US e-commerce may grow by 44.0% year-on-year
According to Digital Commerce 360 estimates , consumers spent a total of $861.12 billion online at U.S. merchants in 2020 , a year-over-year increase of 44.0% , the highest annual growth in U.S. e-commerce in at least two decades . This increase is almost three times the 15.1% in 2019.
The share of online sales in total retail sales has been steadily increasing . In 2020 , U.S. e-commerce penetration will reach 21.3% , up from 15.8% in 2019 and 14.3% in 2018. The more than 5% increase in e-commerce penetration is the largest year-over-year increase in U.S. retail sales to date .
The pandemic - related surge in online shopping contributed to an increase of $174.87 billion in e-commerce revenue in 2020. Without the surge in online sales caused by the pandemic, e-commerce sales would have reached $861.12 billion by 2022 .
$4.04 trillion! Online sales account for 101% of total retail sales
Total retail sales increased 6.9% to $4.04 trillion from $3.78 trillion last year , the fastest pace since 1999 , according to a Digital Commerce 360 analysis of the latest data from the U.S. Department of Commerce .
Although the pandemic had a huge negative impact on in-store shopping , total retail sales saw record growth , thanks to huge increases in e-commerce .
In 2020, online sales accounted for 101% of total retail sales. This means that sales in other channels have declined , and this is the first time in history that e-commerce transactions accounted for a higher percentage of all retail gains. The previous high was in 2008, when e-commerce accounted for 63.8% of all retail sales growth.
Among them, Amazon maintained its position as the largest online retailer in North America by a huge margin. According to Digital Commerce 360, the online retailer's revenue in 2020 will exceed US$296 billion, an increase of 38.6% from 2019. This means that in 2020, Amazon's sales alone accounted for nearly one-third of US e-commerce sales , or 31.4%.
Other large online retail sites, such as Walmart, Best Buy, Target and Kroger, are expected to achieve online sales growth of more than 85% in fiscal 2020.
