Affected by the snowstorm, many Amazon distribution centers were shut down

Christmas in the United States has just ended, and some people have waited all night but still haven't seen their presents ...

Amazon, the U.S. Postal Service, UPS and FedEx had warned that the snowstorm that hit large swathes of the United States would severely disrupt delivery operations in the final days before Christmas.

"Due to severe weather conditions across the U.S., we experienced significant disruptions at our Memphis and Indianapolis hubs last night, but we are continuing to work hard to provide service," FedEx said in a statement Friday morning.

FedEx told U.S. customers that packages expected to be delivered on Friday or Saturday may be delayed.

UPS said: "Severe weather in several states has affected UPS's air and ground networks, including UPS hubs in Louisville, Kentucky and Rockford, Illinois. As a result, some delivery and pickup services in these areas will be affected."

The U.S. Postal Service said 89 post offices were temporarily closed due to the storm, including 53 in South Dakota , 20 in North Dakota, six in Nebraska and five each in Minnesota and Iowa.

Due to severe weather, the U.S. Postal Service has notified customers to clear ice and snow from their sidewalks, stairs and mailboxes to improve delivery difficulties for postmen.

Amazon said it will close some distribution centers due to the storm and that some employees who were unable to work their scheduled shifts will receive compensation.

Amazon spokeswoman Barbara Agrat said: "Out of an abundance of caution, we have temporarily closed some sites in affected areas. Next, we will continue to monitor weather conditions and reopen sites based on the situation and resume operations when it is safe."

The storm also disrupted passenger flights and other modes of transportation during this busy holiday travel period.

More than 3,000 passenger flights scheduled to, from and within the United States on Friday had been canceled by 8 a.m. ET, according to tracking service FlightAware.
