Amazon to test automated checkout technology

Amazon announced on Wednesday that it will introduce automated checkout technology to two Whole Foods stores , marking the latest test of Amazon 's " grab and go " system in large supermarkets , according to CNBC . The new technology , called "Just Walk Out," will be launched in two Whole Foods stores opening in 2022. The two stores are located in the Glover Park neighborhood of Washington, D.C. , and Sherman Oaks, California.

To use Amazon's "Just Walk Out " service , shoppers scan an app to enter the store , where cameras and sensors track the items they select and automatically check out without waiting in line .

Amazon customers can check out by scanning their app, inserting a credit or debit card linked to their Amazon account , or entering the store via a palm-scanning payment system . For those shoppers who choose not to use Amazon's cashier- free technology , they can only use self-checkout or go to a customer service kiosk to check out.

Amazon’s rollout of the technology, which it has adopted in a growing number of store formats and is also selling to third-party retailers, puts the company ahead of startups that have developed similar systems but have n’t marketed them as aggressively .

Meanwhile, reports say that Amazon 's promotion of the "Just Walk Out" system may arouse the dissatisfaction of labor unions. The labor unions said that with the promotion of this technology , many cashiers are at risk of unemployment, but Amazon countered that this would allow employees to do other work in the store . The two sides are at odds.

Amazon has brought a lot of high-tech changes to Whole Foods since it bought the grocery chain for more than $ 13 billion in 2017. In April, Amazon launched a palm scanning payment system at Whole Foods stores in Seattle, and Amazon said it would expand the technology to other locations next .
