Valued at over 2 billion euros! Italian pet food market e-commerce growth reaches peak

According to foreign media reports, in the first eight months of 2020, the value of the Italian pet food market exceeded 2 billion euros, and the growth of e-commerce channels peaked in March 2020, with an increase of more than 220%.

 

The pet food market grew by 2.8% compared to 2018 , and the industry is also growing in the e-commerce channel due to the impact of the pandemic situation.

 

Iri-Assalco's latest report on the Italian pet food market recreates a sector that is evolving and digitalizing . On the one hand, the e-commerce channel, which has been growing by double digits since 2018 , reached its peak growth in 2020. On the other hand, the online channel has become an important way for its development .

 

Milanese Dog Heroes, an Italian startup focused on online business, hopes to revolutionize dog food in a healthy way. It is also a retailer that has developed well in the pet food market during the epidemic.

 

The startup recently launched its first crowdfunding campaign, which reached its goal in just two weeks , raising more than €450,000. The startup has already increased its capital in seed investments, bringing its total investment to nearly €1 million in one year.

 

Food is undoubtedly one of the categories that dog lovers pay more attention to, with the European industrial food market alone being worth more than €10 billion , but it’s also an industry that is undergoing a huge transformation .

 

Dog Heroes (dogheroes.it) distributed 95,000 dog food to 1,600 dogs in the first 16 months of activity, and reached a peak of more than 300% monthly orders during the first pandemic period . And since then, turnover has continued to grow, averaging more than 50% over the previous quarter, which shows the huge potential of digital channels.

 

Without the online development model , such performance would not be possible. The founder of Dog Heroes said: " We firmly believe that the combination of e-commerce channels with production control and product quality control is very correct. With the new capital , we will build a factory with a production capacity of more than 1,000 square meters and produce up to 50 tons of pet food per month . "
