Chinese shippers also start to rent ships

Affected by the epidemic, global ports are congested and containers are hard to come by. The supply chains of many companies are facing the threat of interruption. In this situation, some wealthy shippers directly choose to rent ships to solve the problem, such as Home Depot, Amazon, Walmart, etc. Recently, domestic shippers have also joined the ranks of "renting ships".

According to Yiwu Business Daily, on the morning of September 3, the "Yellow Sea Pioneer" set sail from Ningbo Daxie Xinye Wharf to Los Angeles. This route is the first route opened by Yiwu enterprises to "develop in groups". The ship is carrying 1,700 TEU containers, a total of more than 10,000 tons of cargo, and is expected to take 18 days to reach Los Angeles.

It is reported that the Yiwu Municipal Bureau of Commerce relied on the cargo grouper system to give full play to the advantages of cargo grouping and put forward the idea of "chartering a ship". The relevant person in charge of the Municipal Bureau of Commerce said that in the next step, Yiwu will work closely with powerful international shipping companies to further deepen the "chartering a ship" model and open more international logistics lines.

Entering the peak season of shipping in the second half of the year, the demand for shipping is increasing, and more and more shippers are joining the ranks of "chartering ships". So far, Home Depot, Amazon, Walmart, Target, Dollar Tree, IKEA and other retail companies have started the "chartering ships" model.

In the past, companies that chose to rent ships were either furniture and home furnishing giants such as Home Depot and IKEA, which have to transport large volumes of furniture raw materials and finished products, or retail giants such as Amazon and Walmart, which have to transport large quantities of products. Given the large demand for transportation and the fact that they are not short of money, it is not difficult to understand why they would spend money to rent ships.

Judging from the ship chartering action of domestic cargo owners this time, it is a case of companies "banding together for warmth", with the government taking the lead behind the scenes to help cargo owners negotiate with logistics and shipping companies and open routes, which led to the seemingly "luxurious" ship chartering action.

"Renting a ship" or "chartering a ship" may seem like a good idea, but in fact it is a helpless move. At a time when freight rates continue to rise and you may not be able to book a cargo hold even if you pay a high price, spending a little more money to transport the goods yourself and ensure the stability of the supply chain is equivalent to "spending money to avoid disaster."
